The Edutopia Poll

by Sara Bernard

The Education Sector, a nonprofit think tank in Washington, DC, recently released a report titled "On the Clock: Rethinking the Way Schools Use Time." The report explores the benefits of increased instructional time during the school day but warns that the quality of teaching is as important as the quantity, and makes specific recommendations for policy makers on how to use school time more effectively.

Though many schools have begun lengthening the school day, some argue that more time in school -- regardless of how it's used -- puts too great a demand on students and teachers, requires too significant an increase in funding, and may not even make much of a difference in student achievement. What do you think?

As an 8th grade student at Frolio middle school in abington massachusetts, i think that school days should not be longer. Kids do not like attending school as it is, most would rather be doing something that they enjoy. This brings us to high school kids droping out. Making the school day longer will only overload kids bringing them to the conclusion that droping out of school is the best idea. Jobs are another reason for drop outs. Some kids have issues at home where it is assential that they work to help. If the school days are longer they will be obligated to drop out to work. It may be good only because it could help kids with their problem areas in school and keep them away from drugs and other kinds of trouble. Family is another issue. We will not have time to spend any time with our families and friends. Going to school for a long amout of time will overload our minds making it hard to focus throughout time. If the government really does want to help kids then after school tutoring are the best way.

School sucks dude i mean we shouldnt even have school ok maybe a little school like 2 hours a day in the morning starting at like 9:00 that would give all the kids some time to sleep in and catch up on their missed sleep thats my opinion

Longer School Days

I am fortunate in that my school hosts several foreign exchange students each year. The one thing each seems to have in common is thier home countries all have a longer school year and most start school earlier and end earlier during the day. My foriegn exchange students have a stronger work ethnic and in turn get better grades. I don't see a problem with going to school for 9 weeks then having a week off, and repeating that same pattern until summer. Begin summer with a 2 week break then start a new 4 week term with another 1 week off, then finish with a 5 week term and 2 weeks off before the new school year starts. Students lose so much momentum and knowledge having 3 months off, that is difficult to get them back to where they left off once the summer ends.

Having a longer school day will cause the students to get more crabby and impatient and will cause more fights. Lengthening the school day will also be more expensive because you will need to heat and run the school longer.
