The Edutopia Poll
by Sara Bernard
Halloween, the favorite holiday of many kids, is almost upon us. What's more fun than dreaming up a costume, parading for parents and peers, and gobbling free candy? School grounds have long been a focus for Halloween hoopla, but for some schools, these traditions can pose considerable problems. Dress code concerns can make costumes a headache for teachers and administrators, bans on junk food prohibit candy consumption, and safety issues surrounding outdoor parades and other events are drawing increasing levels of caution. In some schools, Halloween celebrations have been banned entirely in order to accommodate families for whom the holiday conflicts with their religious beliefs. How should schools respond to these obstacles? We're interested in your opinion.

This is a high school civics class. They have agreed that we need to celebrate halloween because it is a fun thing to do. It is just one day out of the year to have some fun. Halloween is a classic holiday that has been around for a long time. It is an American tradition and should be celebrated. It is for younger kids and a fun time for all.
To kids it means free candy!

First take christmas now they took halloween from my kids in there school. You fanatics and Simple minded people need to stop. My kids know there roots and the bible. What you fail to see is there going to grow up to be there own person regardless of your fanatic ways. Who knows maybe they will grow up and trick or treat with there kids. Heres a concept ever heard of private schools or home schooling then you can raise biblethumping children right there in your basement.
And quit pushing your beliefs on my children or im going to sic my kids on yours.Ill raise my kids the way i want. And last time i check it was tax paying dollars funding the public schools. If you want christ back in christmas do something about it. I am about this halloween thing ive sent lou dobbs, c.n.n., local paper, superintendent,a email and plan to start a petetion. If that dont work maybe a riot lmao
I think that

I think that carman-ainsworth from vehicle city should allow students to celebrate halloween with masks and hats and make-up. Our school is too strick and they dont allow us to do any of the factors that halloween is about. I hope someone sees this so they can do something.

Costumes create problems

I teach at a vocational high school and here is our problem. Some of our academic teachers have encouraged students to get pettitions signed by lab teachers that would allow costumes in lab classes. Although students could not dress in costumes during academic classes because it "would be a distraction".
In order to "guarantee" lab teacher compliance students would donate $2.50 to Breast Cancer Awareness, in order to participate.
Sadly, many teenagers are drawn to violence and this will become an opportunity to show us how violent they can be.
Fake guns, knives. blood and gore will abound. And teachers will be left playing the "costume police".
Students with long flowing robes endanger themselves and others in some trade labs. Yet, because money is donated to a good cause, some teachers feel we should throw aside our rules and risk student injury. Isn't it interesting that academic teachers think it is a distraction in their class but not in lab?
Of course not all students will use this as an opportunity to dress like hookers and bring fake weapons to school, but some will. Why would anyone put yourself in the situation? Because some charity gets a couple of hundred dollars? What ever happened to donating your money to a charity without expecting something in return?
While I personally think Halloween is harmless fun outside of school, there are many people who do not celebrate Halloween and even consider it satanic.
Why do schools go out of their way to protect non-Christian points of view but fail to accept that some forms of Christianity are valid, even though they are strict?
I say have a party in the gym or cafeteria and let students who want to participate go there to celebrate. Let the principal be the costume police and let me teach.

This is America people. If you dont like it go back to the coutnry your from. This country was founded upon Christianity, and the word God. We should continue saying the Pledge of Allegance, celebrating christmas and Halloween in schools and stop trying to apease the minoirty of people. America is a democracy. This is our foundation. Soon our children wont know what holidays stand for anymore. I believe everyone should celebrate their own relgious beliefs but leave our children and our countries foundation alone. This is what and who we are. Why do you think so many people from others countries come here? They enjoy their freedoms we have here. They assimulate to our culture, we dont and shouldnt change our culture and foundation for them. This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!!!
We had to change Christmas break to "winter break", Halloween to "fall festival", the Christmas tree is now called the "holiday tree" no more Halloween costumes. They have tried to take away the pledge and remove God. What is next people? Stand up for what we believe in, protect the future of our children. For americans sake!
God Bless the United States of America

Um. . .you're a Christian? Surely you realize that Halloween is neither a Christian or American holiday? Perhaps you should Google "Halloween origins" and while you're at it, "Christmas origins" and see what you get.
