By the Numbers: Family Participation Is a Plus

Thirty-four percent of teachers believe that parents' involvement in their children's education is excellent or good, according to a survey by the Public Agenda research group.

The feeling is reciprocal:

• Seventy-one percent of parents wish they could do more.
• Eighty-seven percent of public K-8 schools blame parental time constraints for the shortfall.

But a majority of parents are not comfortable making such high-level calls. Not surprisingly, few teachers approve of parents taking these roles.
