Twenty-six states offer full-time online schooling programs for grades K-12, up from five states in 2007.

Last year, Michigan became the first state to require high school students to have online learning experience before they graduate.

Today, an estimated 92,000 students are registered at more than 190 cyber charter schools.

Tech proponents are increasingly advocating for a blended learning environment that mixes traditional classroom instruction with online coursework.

Many students pursue online learning to secure courses not offered at school, to work, or to receive extra help.
