Yes. Longer periods allow for more extensive coverage of class material, more opportunities for teachers to employ a variety of teaching styles, and less time wasted in passing periods and in adjustment to new class periods.
No. Altering the school schedule in this way will not do much for student achievement and may add costs, difficulties for students, and logistical issues that don't justify the change.
It depends. Schools should be able to structure their schedules creatively and flexibly so that students have the best accommodation for their interests and learning styles.
