The short answer is yes. Both should be done. There is a real need to recharge and refresh between semesters and years. Part of that refreshing should be in the form of professional development -- this can be in a formal pursuit through workshops, conferences, and continuing ed courses; or the informal path of conversations with colleagues and others outside of the profession and investigations into all of those things that there wasn't time for during the school year.
