i believe, as a high school student myself, that we should be allowed to choose some books that we have to read, because not everyone likes to read the books that the teachers choose for the students to read. I myself, love to read fantasy, and mystery, as well romance, and find it very hard to understand, as well as want to read books that teachers have chosen for us to read that not everyone like to read.

Perhaps, but first Re-Reading

Students benefit first and foremost from putting themselves as readers in historical contexts. I've written about the role re-reading might play in our ELA classes. Provide students a guided study of their own histories as readers in order to better understand who they were as readers, have become, and wish to be. If they've lost the joy of reading, let that loss be a serious text of study. The full JAAL article is available here: http://www.reading.org/Publish.aspx?page=/publications/journals/jaal/v52...

I think students should choose their own reading material with some teacher guidance. They should be exposed to all genres, many of which they may not know exist. They should be allowed, in fact, taught to read newspapers and magazines. I look at my friends. Some read only fiction, some only nonfiction, some only trade journals. We should allow those preferences to be reflected in our children's reading. BUT, just like making them taste broccoli and spinach, they should try a bit of everything to find out what they like. The goal, I think, is to make functional people out of the kids. And functioning comes in all shapes and sizes.

I want to read books that interest me, I don't care how interested someone else is in the book, I need to be the one interested in order to read it.

I don't mine reading the books. It just shows me what books i like and what i don't, but it would be great if we could veto the books that we dislike.

No I do not think students should have a say in what book is read in the english classroom. The teacher should decide what would be best for the students. That way the best teaching is done and students are learning what they NEED to learn and not wha tthey WANT to learn.

I also agree that both are needed i feel mainly for a student to learn they have to somewhat be interested in what they are reading even though some of the more serious novels may not always be interesting most of the time its still a requirement so the student should push through it

i totally agree we should have a choice on the books we have to read. the teachers should have some say in it to thou. some students would like books where there is no swearing because they are a christian. there are kids that only like books with swearing. so some kids want christian books others want ones with nothing but swearing. so shoudnt we have the right to choose i think so and theres other people that agree too.
