all i have to say to you guys is that its not forced labor you prolly have never done community service unless it was forced on you if your talking like that because alot of times when you help some one out they normaly provide you with a meal and it feels so great to be able to help them out i know that i helped a lady who had hurt her leg and i mowed her lawn and i was talking with my friend about how i needed a job well this lady over heard me saying and said well my son runs a pizza shop i could have him give you a job ... well look at that not only did i give to my community but i also got a job with almost no effort and it was paying 7.75 starting working full time.

It's great that we have a variety of passionate opinions, but please keep your comments positive, on-topic and civil. There are plenty of places to post if you're unable to heed this simple request. But Edutopia isn't one of them!!
Students who are required to do community service have been found to be more academic in their adult life. Therefore if you want succeed do community service!

Just as we teach students about history, art, music and poetry and expose them to sports and other activities in order to enrich their lives, knowing how it feels to give of yourself is something we need to expose them to as well. To deny this opportunity to experience the joy of helping others and to help put their own lives in perspective is to do a tremendous disservice to our children. There should be a community service component in high school but it should only be for a few hrs.so that they can experience it.The high schools should make the arrangements and match kids to causes close to their heart, whether it be the environment, animals, children, the elderly, etc. It should be part of the health curriculum.
You people are crazy, forced labor???? Are we going to go down that road again??? I thought community service was something people did as either a form of punishment or "BY VOLUNTEERING". Yes, it would be nice if they all volunteered to do community service, but I'm of the firm opinion that this is just a new form of forced slavery(free labor).

forced labor is different
forced labor is different than going to school
Forcing someone to do labor
Forcing someone to do labor they could get paid for and forceing someone to learn are not the samething.
Hayyy

Perhaps a better idea would
Perhaps a better idea would be to require students attend mandatory tutoring.
The "community service" idea has more to do with free labor and saving money than it has to do with any type of benefit to the students.
