The excess of sweets and junk food eaten by kids theses days has many repercussions on the body! Not only diabetes and obesity, but the dental problems also have a seriously growing incidence. The problem is that kids don't come to dental controls as regularly as they should. I work in a dental implant Beverly Hills Clinic which handles both adults and children and in the last years we had very few kids coming in for check ups, most coming with serious problems. A bit of education in this matter and reducing the quantities of sweets can really improve their general and dental health!
I think we need to educate our students that most things in moderation are OK but there should be balance. Candy should be allowed but there should be also healthy options like vegetable tray and sugar-free items. Eating candy is not a sin or bad for you. But if that is all you eat at the exclusion of healthy foods then there is an issue. The increase in obesity among our youth demonstrates an imbalance of many things: higher caloric meals not followed by adequate exercise. As educators we need to educate on balance and what a great opportunity we have in this area to educate on nutrition, importance of nutrition, active lifestyle, etc.
You are part of the problem here in the US...why are we so ready to give up OUR culture...people can practice their own religion, voodoo, superstition, whatever they want to call it...why should AMERICANS worry about offending their beliefs when they don't give a flying hoot about ours...my children deserve the right to celebrate what AMERICANS celebrate...if others don't want to participate...stay home that day!
While candy is sweet and delicious, we should remember the energy sugar rush that can distract students. As well as Fruits and veggies alternatives will save the kids parents a bundle at the next dentist visit.
By rewarding children with sugary treats, we are actually creating unhealthy patterns in their diets. This can lead to a need for a sweet stimulant for a job well done. Obesity....
I understand that a lot of people are trying to lose weight but not everyone is. We shouldn't have to ban candy from schools just because people will be too tempted to eat it. That's ridiculous. If you really want to lose weight, learn to control your temptations. Kids don't HAVE to take the candy. I'm overweight and I know how to control myself. I usually just say "no thanks" when a teacher passes out candy. Let's be real, here.
For me, it isn't about candy- that is a personal choice. What it is about is- the holiday itself. If Halloween, like so many other holidays, wasn't celebrated in public schools, then we wouldn't be discussing the candy issue.
Well i dont think that schools should EVER do that, one because its only ONE day not every day of the year. two because kids are kids of course they are going to want to bring candy. and three well, no ones giong to listen to them anyway so its not as they really could ban candy. So ovr all thats a really lame idea whoever came up with that.
Are you a teacher? Have you ever been a kid? Halloween is once a year. Lighten up!! It's not like we teachers tell the student's to start stuffing their faces with candy at 8:30 and keep stuffing until the final bell. Most teachers have a class party at the end of the day. Parties usually include games, other treats, and yes candy.
This is not smart policy-making. In fact, it's as brainless as some school's zero tolerance approach to "weapons." Here's where that can lead... The mom of a six year old sent a cake to school with her kid to celebrate his birthday. In the box she included a cake cutting knife. When the child arrived he immediately handed over the box to his first grade teacher who wasted no time cutting and serving the cake (I'm sure it was yummy) Before he could lick the frosting from his lips, the teacher sent him to the principal who expelled the birthday boy on the spot for bringing a "weapon" to school.
Kids aren't overweight because of the candy they eat on Halloween. Since that isn't the cause of childhood obesity in America, banning what is, hands down, the best in-school holiday, won't solve the problem.

Are you kidding me? School Lunches are healthy??...Let's let kids be kids at least on Halloween. There is nothing wrong with a tummy ache!
