Charter schools have nothing to offer that a public school couldn't given the same amount of money and fewer regulations. I teach in the Southeastern Pennsylvania area and we were just told on the news that Tony Danza, the reknown scholar, will be teaching in a local Philadelphia charter school. This is quality education about which so many of charter school advocates brag?!
I'm sure many charter schools offer students great opportunities and attract talented teachers. However, charter schools have the luxury of selecting which students to teach through test scores and auditions or whatever standards they wish. In our small, rural county, a great charter school has attracted some of the brightest, most talented kids, with the result that test scores in all the other public high schools in the county have declined in their absence. (In a small county, a few students moving one way or the other, has a dramatic impact on a school's scores.)
The charter school receives the kudos for offering a great education, while the public schools struggle to educate less motivated students with fewer resources, and receive public criticism for their supposed inadequacy in preparing kids for standardized tests. Until charter schools are open to all students, it's a rigged game.
I hate the idea of uniforms and not letting kids exspress themselves. True alot of regular public schools arent the greatist but it was the funnest.

No blanket answer makes sense. Charter schools that respond to student needs, in general ones that are well-managed and determine course content locally, have great promise. Ones that, like too many public systems, try to routinize all instruction are bound in the long-run to failure.
My experience has been that charter schools have had a positive effect on all the public schools.
As districts and schools struggle to keep students from leaving for the charter schools, the quality of the non-charter public schools has improved. Some of the non-charter schools have begun implementing successful practices of the charter schools.
The overall quality of public education in our area has increased as a result of the competition created by the successful charter schools.
In our State (NC) I think some Charter Schools do serve valid needs. The schools that offer enrichment in rural areas, smaller classes in inner city school or low performing areas, smaller class sizes for children with special needs are ALL beneficial to our school districts, counties, and state. But there are too many Charter Schools that primarily serve children from highly educated homes. These Charter Schools compete with districts for dollars, resources, and involved, educated parents. Why do we need those particular Charters, especially when most of those parents have the resources to send their children to private schools. Those are just gloried voucher schools. But of course the parents at these Charters have time to lobby the state school board and of course there charters are renewed. A separate school system via Charter Schools that serve the privileged is NOT how I want my tax dollars spent. And they detract from the quality of local schools and communities.
My children go to private school. Not because we are rich (because we are not.) because they are getting a good education. The uniforms are great because we don't have to worry about keeping up with the Jones's. They all wear the same out fit, no distractions, no teasing. Don't you remember being a kid and all of the social stresses and distractions? My kids can just be kids and learn.
I have been in public without uniforms and public with uniforms and clothing codes were created in both. One was more expensive than the other but teasing, distraction and fit existed in both.
I worked at a charter school in Cincinnati, Ohio. I would say that was the worst teacher experience I had. As a first year teacher, I had no support. I felt that leave to sink or swim. It seem that the harder that I tried the more I failed. There was not support from the administration. I was told by the principal that I talked to loud so that is why the students in my class were loud. The students had no respect for the staff,administration, or their peers. The students we given no consequences for their actions because we were told not to. The students were not held accountable for anything.
i go to a charter school. yeah there strict on uniform but we have fun & we go beyond the classroom walls if u know what i mean. we do many fieldtrips and ooo we have so much fun! Good peopple good teachers. good education.
