As a teacher and a mom, I can see both sides of the issue. First, as a parent, todays students are not yesterdays. Our society has allowed these changes and our children. They have grown up with these cell phones, and I-Pods. Most parents give cell phone to their kids to be used for emergency situations. Two years ago our High School was having a rash of bomb threats and I found it very useful for my son to call me to tell me that they were evacuating the school and going to our Civic Center. This happened several times. Because of the cell phone I knew what was going on and where my son and daughter were. As a teacher I don't have a problem with cell phones in school. If students in 5-8 have their own cell phone, most of the time they probably keep it in their back packs on silent.
I do feel that the problem may be more serious at the high school level. I think school administration and teachers need to lay the law down with students. If a student is caught using their phone in class, then it should be taken away with the parent coming in to have a conversation with administration. Also teachers should be aware of what is going on in their classrooms at all times.
Yes we should have cell phones in school, what if there is an emergency.
