Yes. Students, teachers, and families should have time to enjoy more of the summer (and older kids should be able to keep summer jobs). Students are more attentive and more likely to attend with later start dates, and schools can save on energy bills.

No. Starting earlier means ending earlier, and early start dates allow schools to complete the semester before winter break, which keeps information fresh in students’ minds and boosts achievement.

I don’t think school start dates make much of a difference.

Schools start too early
High Schools start too early - in the morning. Research and common sense shows teens need more sleep and do not perform weill first thing in the morning. Young childrena re up and ready to go - they should start first. Our high school lets out in the early afternoon, it would be much better to have a later day, in sync with most of the working world.

School is for noobs
It depends
School start times should fit what a community wants from their local school system. If the community wants to start school in the middle of August, let them. If they want to wait until after Labor Day, then that is up to them as well.
However, I do believe the community should have a say.

Year Round School
The time has come for Year Round School. Short breaks between quarters provide opportunity for reteaching those who have a need or interest and a time for families.
Do schools start too early?
Most parents need schools so they can accomplish more than child care. 24/7 would make a lot of adults happy. If WalMart can do it, why not some school?
A pilot project in a big metro area would likely be slammed with applications.
Would I want to be a child expected to mold to his parent's graveyard shift routine? No. Would I want to be graveyard shift teacher? No.
But I am not going into the 21st century on the front end of trying to rear children and to work.
Families sharing breakfast after their school/work routine, and before all retire to sleep for the day, might recover some 20th century "Leave it to Beaver" and "Father Knows Best" happiness.
Just imagine...pre-dawn Little League games...growing up thinking daytime was mysterious and different....hmm.
To early and to hot
I think school is starting to early. August is usually the hottest month of the year. Busses have no A/C and the A/C's are always tearing up at school and here in Tennesse we are breaking records with high temps. They are closing schools or just making kids go 1/2 days. It's crazy. Also, school starting so early makes High School football start earlier. Their are kids collapsing and worse from the heat. Football used to be played when it was cold outside. Start School later and High School football will start later.
