The Edutopia Poll

The first day of the new school year is fast approaching (or, in some cases, already past), and many students have begun asking themselves that burning question: "What should I wear?" But in more and more schools across the country, this issue is no longer a worry. An increasing number of public schools require that all students dress in school-prescribed outfits.

Proponents contend that similar clothing can be a great equalizer, doing away with the troubles that attire can cause: discrimination, cliques, distraction due to skimpy or otherwise inappropriate apparel, and even violent conflict based on clothing and accessories that are offensive or suggest gang affiliation. On the other hand, many people use clothes as a form of self-expression, and requiring school uniforms can take away the sense of individuality and creativity so important to students. How should schools address this issue? We're interested in your opinion.

Should public schools require uniforms?

Oh NOOOOOOOOOOO! Uniforms

Submitted by Tiffany (not verified) on November 14, 2007 - 14:21.

Oh NOOOOOOOOOOO! Uniforms should not be wore. When I was in the eleventh grade I had to wear uniforms. They were suposedly a means for improving test scores.I guess the uniforms did not work because that particular school got shut down. So my twelth grade year I had to attended the school we consolidated with which didn't require the use of uniforms.
The moral of my little passage is uniforms don't change the ability of the person. My first school was no better than the second one, that didn't have a uniform policy.

uniforms are crazii

i think dat uniforms dont change the way people feel about one another if a boy/girl doesnt like this otha boy/girl its not gone change just becaues they have on the SAME THING.. they will still find someway or another to dislike that person...so if you dont get what im saying by now then here it is in a more simple way... UNIFORMS DONT CHANGE PEOPLE OR THEIR ACTIONS.....

i really dont know what the fuss is about uniforms at school. you go to school to learn, not to converse the whole 7 hours, or play around. learning is formal, therefore you should dress formally. and if wearing what interests you is so important, then change after school or in the lockers at school after school hours. No one is forcing you to keep them on after your last class get out. so many of you i see are 'hating on uniforms' why? where is your evidence? you say uniforms are this or that, but without a creditable source it is only an opinion. Do you think on a high school or college pamphlet they want to put photographs of kids sagging their pants, wearing hats in weird ways and conversing in strange lingo? because be honest, kids today do that. I wouldnt want to attend any school that showed that, and anyone with half a brain (no offence) will be dissuaded as well with those pictures. uniforms do not prevent violence of any kind. do you think a bully with a bad attitude will stop beating up on somebody because of the clothes he wear? Do you think a uniform will turn D average students to A excelling students? No, it does not. uniforms merely adress a certain respect one should have for the school, because schools are trying to educate you so you wont live on the streets or be one of those babling crazy bums, and to educate us in how we should behave in society, we could give back to the school by wearing uniforms and giving the campus a good aurora. Why would u fight schools anyway? do u want to live on the street or worse?
