Yes. Teachers can and do help to instill confidence and self-worth in students whose lives outside of school don't offer these things. This in turn can have a positive impact on the student's academic achievement.

No. Teachers can't be parents, too. There are so many demands on teachers and on the school day already that there's only so much a teacher can do for each student.

Yes, to some extent, but big changes in achievement can't be motivated by one teacher alone. Much more extensive intervention is needed to alter the trajectory of the most disadvantaged students.
