Headlines nationwide are trumpeting the imminent demise of school soda pop machines. The country's top soft drink companies have negotiated an agreement with former President Clinton and the American Heart Association to ban sales of high-sugar beverages at schools, with the exception of low-calorie sports drinks. It may seem like a big step forward, but will it really make a difference? We're interested in your opinion.

Will banning the sale of soft drinks at schools significantly decrease childhood obesity and related health problems?

HELP our parent to help our children!!

Submitted by Courtney Marsh (not verified) on October 22, 2007 - 12:00.

I think that the schools need to help the parents but educating them on proper nutrition, some parents are unaware of the things their children need to eat in order to have a healthy life. We also need to educate our parents about exercise they can use at home that is interactive, interesting, and appropriate for the child's age and development. We also need to encourage our parents to become involve in the experience by exercising with the children, showing them the correct things to eat, and being more active. Taking the soda machines out of the schools was a good idea that way you are cutting down on one place that they can recieve sugary beverages. I thought that everyone should know: If you child were to drink one 12-ounce can of soda every day for a year that is equal to 55,000 calories or 15 pounds a year. I found that information on a website that could be very helpful. HTTP://WWW.UCSFHEALTH.ORG/CHILDRENS/MEDICAL_SERVICES/HDISORDER/OBESITY/SWEETDRINKS.HTML

also drink companies are willing to pay some big bucks for schools to sell their drinks, and that money could really help out my school district.

but they also have the bonus of giving that some times needed shot of energy. i have math class first period at 8 in the morning, i have a job a girl friend, i do sports, and i'm in the high school band and chorus. so with all that i don't always have much time to sleep, therefore i fall asleep in school nearly every day. I feel as if some some source of canfine would be a huge boost to my moral and help me through the tough morning hours of the day.

Stopping the sale of soft

Stopping the sale of soft drinks will not slow down the obesity rate in students. Obesity is on the rise because some schools have eliminated PE classes and sports. When students to home, the majority watch TV, play video games, or go on the computer for hours. It is the job of the schools to prepare students for a productive work and personal finance life when they hit the real world. It is up to the parents to monitor their children's eating habits. I do believe not allowing students to eat or drink in the classroom should be a stict rule, since it is distracting to the student doing it and to other students trying to concentrate on learning.

No, it won't. Students

No, it won't. Students learn their eating habits at home but that doesn't mean schools should perpetuate bad habits. ALL junk food and sodas should be banned from schools. Not only that, candy should not be given out as a classroom reward. Nutrition needs to be a part of education and it needs to be reflected in school lunches.

School should not be allowed

School should not be allowed to take soda out of schools! If the kids want it they are going to get it at home anyway!!! What everyone eats or drinks is his or her decision. So by taking it out the school are taking away freedom of choice!!!!!!!!!

i believe that taking soda

i believe that taking soda out of schools is POINTLESS. i think that if a parent wants their child to eat right then they should teach their child to make healthier decisions. i dont think it's a childs fault that they are FAT its their parents-after all who feeds them and teach them poor eating habits BEFORE they even start school.

Snacks and sodas at school

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on March 11, 2008 - 07:01.

but i feel that if they take the sodas and snacks away that it would benefit their health and their ability to focus more in school because when you have snacks and sweets on campus it usually makes you more hipper than it would if you didnt have any

taking soda way from the

Submitted by jay angel (not verified) on October 12, 2006 - 14:28.

taking soda way from the students is pointless, because if a teacher can sit there and drink and cup of coffee infront of thier students shouldnt they be trying to make a difference to? But it doesn't seem that way because they still drink there coffee they still have their soda machine in the teachers lounge and how can they have it there and still make us drink just water and juice. If they really want to make a difference maybe they should stop drinkin their coffee or stop drinking their soda and try and function like that….its really hard, and i am a high school student and some of us work jobs, come home and do homework and get maybe 5 or 6 hours of sleep so we do need a little boost in the morning too.

The whole no pop in school

Submitted by Michelle Black (not verified) on October 9, 2006 - 14:16.

The whole no pop in school is not a good idea once we are in high school we are smart enough to make our own decisions. If we are going to drink pop during school we will bring it in and it isnt making a difference. The other drinks at the snack bar are gross and usually give people stomach aches. Plus it is less common that people go to pop machines anyways usually when they are banned thats when students really want the pop
