Why should I become a member?
Membership is the best way to experience everything Edutopia has to offer! Members are a critical part of our efforts to expand our mission and distribute our award-winning content about what works in public education to a larger base of change agents. As a member, you will receive Edutopia magazine, a special-edition booklet titled Best of Edutopia Cool Schools: Project Learning*, and the Edutopia DVD A New Day for Learning*, plus invitations to Edutopia webinars with education thought leaders throughout the year.
I have been receiving Edutopia magazine free. Will I no longer receive the magazine unless I become a member?
If you are receiving Edutopia magazine and wish to guarantee that your subscription continues without interruption, please upgrade to a paid membership today. Edutopia is converting its free Edutopia magazine to a paid membership model. This new distribution strategy -- supported by paid members, the Lucasfilm Foundation, and our advertising partners -- will help us achieve our goals to expand impact, reach larger audiences, and respond to increased costs (especially for print and postage) without sacrificing content quality.
Why are you starting a membership program?
Our goals for the new Edutopia membership program include serving everyone who is already drawn to Edutopia because of its mission to share what works in public education, expanding our audience, and helping cover increased costs of printing and delivery. In the past, we were unable to fulfill requests from all who wished to subscribe to the magazine. We hope that the membership program will provide a way for all who are interested in positive education change to access our materials -- free on the Web at Edutopia.org and through a membership fee that entitles members to receive our magazine and other media such as our DVDs.
In 2008, about 75 percent of Edutopia's support comes from The George Lucas Educational Foundation. Most of the rest comes from advertisers and grants, and a smaller percentage is derived from the new membership program.
Is my membership good for a calendar year, or for a full year from time of purchase?
Memberships are good for one full year from the time of purchase. Don't worry -- we will send you a reminder when your membership is about to expire.
Is the online transaction secure?
Yes. All online transactions use industry-leading Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to keep your personal information as secure as possible.
Can I purchase a membership via fax or postal mail?
Yes. Download the membership form (PDF) and follow the instructions.
How long does it take to get my membership benefits after I join?
Generally, it takes from six to eight weeks after we record your membership payment for you to receive your benefits. If you are concerned about the status of your membership, please email membership@edutopia.org.
Is my Edutopia membership tax deductible?
To the extent allowed by law, yes. You must subtract the fair market value of any items you receive. Your Edutopia membership confirmation letter includes the eligible amount for a tax deduction.
Is the digital edition of Edutopia magazine still available?
Edutopia magazine will publish in the digital format through December 2008. After that, if you wish to receive the magazine, we will send you a print copy as part of your paid member benefits. Also, Edutopia will continue its commitment to publishing all magazine content on Edutopia.org and supporting its growing community of visitors.
Can I sponsor a membership for someone else?
Yes, you can purchase an Edutopia membership for someone else. You pay for the membership (at any level), and the other person receives the benefits. In the coming months, this process will be available online. For now, please email membership@edutopia.org if you are interested in this option.
Do you offer international memberships?
Yes, we ship Edutopia worldwide. The rate is $45 in Canada, and $85 for all other countries. You can sign up online with a credit card. Edutopia magazine and Edutopia.org often profiles schools and educators in countries throughout the world and we welcome international members.
What about purchase orders and group buys?
If you are interested in purchasing an Edutopia membership via purchase order or getting a price quote for a group buy, please email membership@edutopia.org, or download the membership form (PDF) and follow the instructions.
