Social and Emotional Learning in Louisville

At the heart of the CARE for Kids program are two practices that can take less than half an hour of the school day: the morning meeting, and the empowerment of kids as owners of their own classroom environment.

The first, a 20-minute morning circle, is a time for teachers and students to get to know each other, discuss social and emotional issues, role-play positive behavior, and set a tone of mutual support. In the second, teachers give students the opportunity to set the expectations for themselves. In the process, educators take care to reinforce the lessons inherent in both of these practices throughout the school day.

The daily morning meeting builds a sense of community within the classroom and sets the tone for a day of positive cooperation.
