National Advisory Council member Kathleen Petersen retired as principal of Santa Clara Elementary School, in Santa Clara, Utah, in spring 2009, but remains with the Washington County School District as director of Title I programming.
Petersen began her career in education as a middle school teacher of English, drama, and forensics, and she followed that with principalships at two other Utah elementary schools. She's also worked as a staff developer and a director at one of Utah's regional educational-service agencies.
Petersen has a keen interest in educational technology. During her first principalship, she won grants for more than $1 million to fund multiple computer labs and a "paperless sixth grade" in which students turned in homework using wireless technology.
She holds degrees from Brigham Young University and Utah State University. In 2007, the National Association of Elementary School Principals recognized Petersen as a National Distinguished Principal, and the year before that, she was named the top principal in her home state.
