Blogging with High School Students

Rachel

I am a high school English teacher and would like to start a blog with my students. I am looking for inspiration. Has anyone used a bog with a novel? How did you set it up and what kinds of questions did you post? Thanks.

Implementing technology with your high school students is a wonderful idea. Be sure to get the parents involved and administration involved.

I teach 8th grade lit/comp in a middle school setting. I, too would like to use blogs with my students. I have found my classroom textbook, "Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms" by Will Richardson to be very useful. On page 23 he discusses a lesson in which his students read the book, "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd, and while reading, the students created an online reader's guide. He even contacted the publicist and was able to get the author involved. As I learn more I can let you know...please fill me in, too!

Good luck!

Rachel,
I, too, am looking to start a blog with students. I wanted to suggest an article you may want to read: "Avoiding the Digital Abyss: Getting Started in the Classroom with YouTube, Digital Stories, and Blogs" by Rebecca Mullen and Linda Wedwick (The Clearing House, Nov./Dec. 2008.) These authors suggest helpful free blog software at sites including "Blogger, MyBlogSite, edublogs, and LearnerBlog" (p.69). I hope this is helpful!
