Deterring of plagiarism

Plagiarism is a perennial problem on college campuses. The internet both deepens the problem and promises solutions to it. It deepens the problem by making source material more immediately and easily available for “cutting‐and‐pasting” without attribution.2 But the internet also promises solutions to the problem by allowing teachers to uncover sources of improperly cited (or uncited) material more easily.

Google searches have allowed this for quite some time, but they can be cumbersome and are almost invariably under‐inclusive. More recently, companies have developed software, like PlagTracker, that compares submitte texts to repositories of online sources.

Hi Timur,
I'm a high school teacher, so my experience is a little different from college campuses, but the best way that I've found to deter plagiarism is to set tasks that are not easily predicted. This often requires some creative thinking, but the results are usually better.
