Hello, I teach Japanese high school students English near Tokyo in Japan. As one of the assignments that the students do in our course is writing a Letter to the Editor to a local paper here. The purpose of this is for them to practice writing a very short opinion essay about a controversial topic related to current events. Most students choose topics related to Japan or Asia. While people do still read paper newspapers here, letters to the editor are not published much anymore, so I would like to modernize this assignment. Does anyone have any good ideas for doing this? Perhaps some kind of online activity, or some place where students can share opinions? I would like to keep the same goals--a short opinion essay about a controversial topic. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Hans Albanese
