How many of you actively use the Closed-Caption feature or the available subtitling on DVD and television? There are several major studies that demonstrate that subtitling in media can significantly impact the literacy rates of an entire nation. And there are significant resources available on the web for working with subtitled text. There are transcripts for every movie -- and librettos for every musical -- and lyrics to just about any song -- and there is a great tool for adding subtitling and audio to PowerPoint - or for adding subtitling and PPT to video -- Karafun -- and it is Free! 4th grade techie teacher by day, mom of 3 and Masters student by night.

I always suggest to parents during conferences to turn off the sound and on the Closed captioning. I fins that between the words and the acting the students will improve both their fluency but also their ability to infer information when they are unfamiliar or missed a word or two.
