ipads in the classroom

Flo Anthony 4th grade teacher

The 4th grade at my school will be piloting ipads in the classroom this fall. Each student will receive an ipad for use in regular and enrichment classes. Please share apps you have used and ideas for ipad technology in the classroom. We have been doing a great deal of research on this topic, but it would be great to hear from other teachers who use technology in the classroom. I plan to share throughout the pilot.

I'm working with an ed-tech startup called Classcraft (www.classcraft.com), and we'll have an iOS version of our educational role-playing game ready in the fall. It works best with middle/high schoolers but can be applied over any grade level, subject, and lesson plan. It's free to sign up and try right now if anyone's interested.

Both teachers and students use and play it together, so they can learn and explore the app together as well, if that helps anyone who's nervous about using iOS devices!

I am currently the instructional technology coordinator at a private school P-12. I am finding the iPads difficult. I would like to hear how others who have implemented iPads are having success. Tools like Prezi and Glogster are difficult to use and creation is limited. Glogster does not have an app for their edu account, therefore students cannot create using the iPad. Also we are finding Google Drive to be difficult to create in. Any suggestions? I really like the idea of iPads, small, portable, intuitive with the touch, easy for classroom management, yet the creation part is what we need most.

Hi Lauralyn,

The mistake you're making right now, and this is a common one, is that you're trying to use your iPad like the device you're used to (laptop) instead to the device it actually is.

The iPad is a phenomenal creative tool, it just doesn't do those things you mention all that well. The iPad is an incredibly mobile device with a built-in camera, so start by taking advantage of that. Use iMovie to make book trailers and full movies. From there, branch out to apps that are designed around the iPad's touch interface and are simple to learn, but have a lot of features under the hood that can make more complex things, like Explain Everything and Book Creator. Start to discover how these apps can interoperate with each other, so you can make a screencast in Explain Everything, kick it over to iMovie to add music, then import it into Book Creator as a way to show it off with reflective writing.
