ipads in the classroom

Flo Anthony 4th grade teacher

The 4th grade at my school will be piloting ipads in the classroom this fall. Each student will receive an ipad for use in regular and enrichment classes. Please share apps you have used and ideas for ipad technology in the classroom. We have been doing a great deal of research on this topic, but it would be great to hear from other teachers who use technology in the classroom. I plan to share throughout the pilot.

An Amazing Resource for you

I have been spearheading the research for iPads in our school and was introduced to an amazing resource for apps in the classroom. Go to this link -
https://spreadsheets.google.com/lv?key=tenru11ELMGfma9kDka2moQ&type=view...

or Google iREAD then click & dropdown > Technology click & dropdown > iREAD and a little ways down is says "Database of iOS Apps we Recommend" You'll be amazed!! Escondido School District was an early adopter of the iOS program and put this together with their staff.

I've also been given www.bestappsforkids.com and http://blogs.rockingham.k12.va.us/lpike?s=ipad+apps

Good luck!

My school has iPads in all of the classrooms from preschool through sixth grade. Some of my favorite things are having the students create stories with something like StoryKit, reviewing parts of speech with MadLibs, doing cartoons with Toontastic and math with Nutty Numbers.

There are several list of recommendation. I feel that the most important question is "how will you use it" and base your apps on that.

Here are some ideas:

I can't resist giving a plug for ShowMe. It allows ridiculously simple creation and sharing of lessons. Check out a demo at showmeapp.com and let me know if you want to join the beta program. You can email me at michael@showmeapp.com

Audionote is a great app that will record the discussion in the classroom while letting a person take notes, and it syncs the audio with the notes for playback. This is amazing especially for kids that might be out sick- they could listen to a class discussion afterwards and read along with notes to get caught up, or to review for a test.

Dragon has a dictation app so you can speak and the app will print; great for kids who are struggling with the writing process;

Brainpop has a video and quiz attached- different movies every day. Today it was explaining the work "idiom" and giving examples in an entertaining way.

ihomework is a great calendaring app for kids to track assignments;

ithoughts HD is a great piece of mind mapping software- super easy to use;

Ideate works like a sketchpad

There are apps that work as lab timers; interactive table of elements- you name it. Even SAT review apps.

In the end, remember the iPad is just like a computer- access to the web and all it offers (less flash) and great apps that let you do everything from keynote presentations to artwork to document creation and beyond- let the lesson and pedagogy lead the way, not the very useful and attractive toy alone.
