Hello, I am hoping someone can give me some feedback on the ins and outs of resource teaching. I am a second year teacher, my first year teaching was in a Pre-K inclusion setting and prior to that I worked seven years in Pre-K as an assistant. This upcoming school year I will be working as a resource room teacher servicing children in grades K-5. I am very nervous because I am not really familiar with resource room teaching nor I am very familiar with teaching older children. Any feedback about how lessons are developed or children are grouped would be extremely appreciated. Thanks again.

Hello Heather,
My experience with teachers in the resource room setting is that they are there to support students in the inclusion setting. It is for the student who qualifies for either a special class or regular class placement but needs some special instruction in an individualized or small group setting for a portion of the day. The student receiving this type of support will spend some time in the resource room and some time in the regular classroom with modifications and/or accommodations that will help them be successful. As a resource room teacher, I would imagine you will spend most of your time supporting not only the students both in the resource setting and in the regular education environment but also their teachers and parents.
I hope it will be a position you will find rewarding!

When I was in elementary school, I was an ESE student and was required to go to resource room a couple of times a week to get help in Math and organizational skills. My resource room teacher would help me come up with learning strategies like visualizing writing math problems on a blackboard to help me remember to carry in addition. You are blessed to have a resource room at your school and doubly blessed to be able to be a resource room teacher. I still remember Mrs. friedman fondly and will always be grateful to her for making math fun.

Hopefully by now you have settled into your new classrooms. For me, as a resource teacher, the sky is the limit with each child since each one shows up at your door step with different needs and completely different approaches for learning! My number one goal with each student is to have them walk out of my classroom with a feeling of self worth. So many of these kids come to school feeling totally defeated because school is so hard for them. Finding ways to help them be successful is so very important. There are so many different fun and easy tricks to help our students learn. Being creative and providing them ways in which they can remember what is being taught is a real challenge but an equally rewarding job! Remember, our job is not to recreate the wheel! There are so many wonderful resources out there for us to use, we just have to take the time to look for them! Good luck!
