I am reading the Morning Meeting Book by Roxann Kriete and am beginning to introduce the Morning Meeting to my students. The greeting and the activity parts are going well, but in the sharing part, I am struggling to help my students to respond to the sharer without telling their own story. Also, it is very challenging teaching the kids the difference between questions and comments. Does anyone have any ideas?

I haven't read this book, but I will put it on my list now. I am a student at PSU, in elementary education. I have a practicum class now and I go observe kindergarten this semester. The kids are greeted by the teacher and given their sign in sheets,(write thier names) and then they have an activity such as color, cut and paste. They have a circle time. The teacher asked them a question for the sharing to begin. Do you remember we talked about eggs yesterday. Tell us how you like your eggs in the morning? or What is one of the things you smell in the morning after you get up? This was a FU after a lesson on the 5 sences.I guess you would have to ask them what their opinion or what they thought about something in order to get them to comment on something.

You could try posting and modeling question starters like: Who? What? When? Where? How? Why? etc....

It's actually a fairly sophisticated skill (knowing the difference between an interrogatory and a statement)so scaffolding and lots of practice are a good idea!

Morning meetings in Kindergarten can be challenging, but they are a great way to build the classroom community. I have used lots of modeling for my students to learn the difference between questions and comments.As I am doing a read aloud(Big Books work especially well)I often stop and ask "is this a question or a comment"? Identifying questions and comments in the morning message has also been very effective. I even use questions,comments & compliments during Writer's Workshop Share.Many of my students are English language Learners and these types of activities have helped them with vocabulary and oral language. Just keep modeling,and they will get it.
