Grant funding for SEL

Ginger Cook

Hi everyone - Many people on the webinar yesterday were asking about grant funding for SEL work. If you were part of that webinar, you got to hear Superintenent Shelley Berman talking about the SEL work in Jefferson County, KY. Their work with Caring School Community has been supported with a grant we at the Developmental Studies Center have from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. 2010-2011 will be the last year that this grant will be available. Districts interested in participating must apply by April 15, 2010.

We're holding a webinar on Wednesday, March 3rd at 10:30 PST/1:30 EST to share more about this grant opportunity. Please join us if you can. RSVP at:

You can also learn more about the opportunity at, by emailing me at, or by reading more below.

Best wishes,

Developmental Studies Center (DSC), a nonprofit based in Oakland, has received a large grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that will help school districts adopt its Caring School Community program with FREE professional development. 2010 will be the final year of the grant and we hope to have many more districts take advantage of this grant. There will be a webinar on Wednesday, March 3, with more information. See below.

CSC is consistently highlighted by the What Works Clearinghouse, CASEL, and countless others as a Research-Validated program. It is shown to improve elementary students’ academic achievement and sense of community while decreasing problem behaviors. CSC helps districts and schools create caring and inclusive learning environments that foster children’s academic and social/ethical learning. The grant covers the entire cost of professional development services for school districts that adopt CSC.

Requirements for districts
· Commit 5 or more elementary schools to participate
· Purchase classroom materials for every teacher and a Leader’s Package for each school
· Identify Lead Staff for the Initiative
· Support Professional Development

The final deadline is April 15, but we strongly encourage districts to apply earlier to ensure their first pick of professional development days. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
