Elementary Instructional Technology Specialist for Lewisville ISD

As an Instructional Technology Specialist, I work with teachers on two elementary campuses to support their technology needs related to instruction. On any given day I may provide staff development on the use of various technology tools and software, model or coteach integrated lessons, assist in analyzing data to meet the needs of individual students, or collaborate with teachers to create engaging lessons that seemlessly integrate technology with the district curriculum.

As a member of this group, I hope to learn how other teachers/schools/districts are integrating technology with the various curriculum areas, especially math and science.

After 11 years teaching middle school students in suburban Utah, I also have 2 years experience teaching high school science in a small, rural school in Missouri. Many of my student use all kinds of technology but do not see the value of science, math, and technology education. They depend on someone else to invent or improve the things they use. I am trying to change that mindset. I hope that our discussions in this community will help me with new ideas and strategies.

I am a former classroom teacher and technology trainer for our district. Currently I work as a media specialist in an upper elementary school that services only 5th and 6th graders. I collaborate with teachers to plan units of study that integrate information literacy skills as well as technology into their plans. We are using a lot of web 2.0 tools, but I am looking for ways to integrate more technology into the math/science curriculum to better engage our students and to make the learning more meaningful.

Hello All: I am a computer networking instructor from upstate NY. I teach at a technical high school and I am an adjunct for our local community college. It is my personal opinion that you can't teach technology without math and science. I am always looking for better tools and lessons. I am looking forward to some good conversations in these Edutopia groups!

This introduction will be long, but I feel that it is necessary for you to know so we can have a productive association.

Before moving into teaching, I was a professional geologist for 20 years. So, I taught earth and space science for 4 years when I moved into the high school classroom, teaching at a small district in Virginia (5,000 students total in a very small, economically challenged town of 12 square miles in size with one high school, one middle school, and 4 elementary schools). The high school taught on a traditional schedule of 7 classes/day with durations of 55 minutes, and I met with my students every school day all year. My content knowledge was very deep, and it was very easy for me to immediately start adding technology and project-based learning to my classroom, to which my students responded with great enthusiasm. I am very familiar with a huge number of web resources for earth science to use in the classroom, and I wrote most of my own classroom material. My ability to apply what I was teaching to real-world situations for my students was extensive, and I was completely at ease guiding my students into asking and successfully exploring questions and problems they brought to class.

However, I moved to Lexington, KY, this year, due to health issues with my parents, and I am now in a very large district (60,000 students) where I teach at the smallest of 6 high schools (the enrollment at my new high school is 1,700 students). Our high school teaches on an A/B alternating block schedule, I have 3 blocks a day, and my average class size is 29-31 students. I teach Integrated Science 1, which combines physics and earth science. The first semester is primarily physics, but I have been told there will be more earth science second semester. The last time I was involved in physics was during my undergraduate work, so my memory is rusty and I have to refresh it almost daily just to stay ahead of my students. I am relying heavily on the textbook and its ancillary materials, and though my ability to apply physics to my daily life is far more extensive than that of my students, it is still woefully small in comparison to my abilities in Earth Science.

My high school and district administrations are really pushing adding technology to the classroom, and I fully support this since I have seen first-hand how much more engaged my students are with technology and project-based learning. For me, however, it is a matter of knowledge, time, and availability of resources....

Technological resources at my previous school were far more extensive than they are at my new school. Previously, I had in my classroom a ceiling-mounted LCD projector attached to a dedicated desktop computer, my teacher computer, a document camera, and the ready availability of computer carts with laptop computers and wireless web access. In my new school, I have a ceiling-mounted LCD projector attached to my teacher computer, no classroom computers, 8 desktop computers on carts shared by the entire Science Department, and an overhead projector. There is a document camera that can be checked out in advance for a day at a time, and it is available to the entire school. I used my document camera almost daily on an as-needed basis, and I have not yet been able to anticipate in advance my need for it for a specific day, so I am working without it.

I joined Edutopia originally to help me expand my knowledge of Web 2.0 and other tools. Now, I am hoping Edutopia can help me actually implement the addition of some technology and project-learning into a subject that I feel I am a novice at teaching. I have a great deal of Earth/Space Science knowledge and experience I am willing to share in exchange for help with physics...

Please be patient with me. I work about 70 hours a week currently, so my ability to monitor this group daily is virtually non-existent, but I will do the best I can!

I look forward to a long and enjoyable association with this group.

I teach early childhood education online at two community colleges, so I am always hoping to share and receive wisdom on incorporating new technology into my courses. I also have 3 sons who love science, math and technology, so I am looking for projects they can be involved with both in and out of school (two of them go to project-based charter schools, for the youngest I volunteer in the classroom weekly doing a bird study project). In my job I designed a course for pre-K - 3rd grade teachers in science experiences, the final project for the course is a wiki on early childhood science themes that covers the whole curriculum - art, math, reading, writing, music, etc. I've had mixed results, since many of my students are not tech. savvy, even thought they are taking online college classes. I would love to see more STEM approaches in the schools in general, I think our public schools locally are missing an important opportunity to make learning more engaging at all ages. The classrooms have smart boards, but only a few teachers really use them.

I am always looking for ideas to improve instruction so that I can reach all of my students and to assist others with ideas that I have already tried and found to be successful.

Sick of excruciatingly disinteresting classes and turned off on school in general I graduated a semester early from high school to do something as much unlike school as possible---be an attack helicopter crew chief in the U.S. Army.

Long story short: I met some teachers who could actually teach, tutored co-workers' K-12 kids, went to community colleges, left Army, earned Bachelor of Science in Engineering with distinction from Purdue University/worked as K-12 substitute teacher, act as staff advisor for Purdue student STEM organizations,
help kids with K-12 schoolwork, etc. Have worked as a software engineer past 30 years.

Registered STEMschool Inc. as an Indiana non-profit in 2007 to provide free STEM help to K-12 teachers, students, and schools in the Lafayette Indiana area to stimulate interest in STEM, make school more interesting, and better prepare students for the future. In past week have asked Duke Energy to donate unused building for students to use for self-directed projects and get all kinds of homework help.
