Not much happens in a school in a transformational way without the assent of the principal and support from local administrative groups on a system wide STEM initiative.
First you can call a meeting on STEM, using resources, to share the vision of why it is needed.
Then you can establish in the school some starting points for the work. National Lab Day is over but the site has a mechanism for creating an awareness of local people who will support teachers in the classroom.
Find out what the depth of experience is that your teachers have in Science, math, engineering and technology. Sometimes a sparse background and lack of content knowledge creates fear. So create a proessional development walk through of STEM initiatives
FIrst do the ideas from the Convocation on the Gathering Storm. Why do we need STEM? What is the outcome that the business people are looking for from STEM.
Science pick a day and do just interesting and appropriate introductions to pruject based learning from
places that support your curriculum dictates and use some multimedia, plenty of it here on the site.
Math. Check out the Math Forum, Shodor.org , and the Exploratorium and other sites for
interesting math journeys. If possible use some math project that is hands on for everyone.
The Cusinaire people have a project which I enjoyed on the Promethian Bus. But I was a person familar with Cuisenaire tools.
Engineering. There are lots of great videos on You Tube , to show and share. ESS was a very simple engineering project in which kids built the biggest thing they could from clay, and then from clay and straw, and then from clay, straws and string and so on. Some building project in which people have to think about the properties of the material they are using. Or look at Eva Reeder's film on Edutopia.
We saw it and a local builder helped us to imagine a playground ( we were fourth grade). It was so good the community built one for us. but we had to go through the total planning process and we
had community meetings and discussions and so on, PTA involved. I like the involvement of NASA resources since there are so many and so many things to help teachers with. I will post an astronomy one and pictures that will be of interest that can be broadened to include art and cultures. Windows to the World, UCAR is the base site.
I could go on and on, but send me the grade level and number of teachers, let me know if you have teacher coaches , and or flexible personnel who want to do transformational change.
