Community Service Projects

Shannon Hill

I am in the middle of a community PBL. I am looking for some community service projects like the one mentioned in an earlier discussion called Pennies for Peace. What are other community service projects my students could be involved in? Thanks for your help!!

Check out Learn and Serve America. They are a nation-wide service learning organization- I have a Service Learning project with Florida Learn and Serve, I received a grant to do the project two years in a row now.
Service Learning is community service BTW.

Check out the wonderful student projects, volunteering opportunities, and student. experiences with community involvement at wwwm KidsCare.org & www.GenerationOn.org.

October 17th-24th is National Kids Care Week sponsored by GenerationOn.org - this organization challenged schools and organizations nationwide to submit project proposals for student-based projects that would choose a focus or theme related to a social/community issue (animal rescue, global warming, poverty, etc.) The projects are all scheduled to commence during Kids Care Week.

GenerationOn sponsored this upcoming event and awarded over 33 mini-grants to fund these exemplary project ideas. The grants were given to schools and student organizations with the best project proposals.

Whitesboro Central School District in Central New York State (Hart's Hill Elementary School - Special Education Classroom (K-2) - Sara Zogby)was awarded one of these mini-grants for our Volunteering & Awareness of Local Non-Profit Organizations Project. Sara Zogby's nine students from her K-2 special education class chose to focus on a local domestic and wild animal sanctuary/rescue/educational center called Spring Farm Cares.

Let me know if anyone is interested in more information or resources - I am happy to share!

PBL with a Purpose

+1

My school uses PBL and looks to find service opportunities that grow out of the theme or focus of the project. By doing this we have been able create a much more direct link between the service and the learning involved for students. just a thought :)

How old are your students. The organization I work for, Mikva Challenge, works with high school students and provides curriculum and opportunities for students to engage in project based learning and become activists for change in the communities. Check out our work on www.mikvachallenge.org. We also provide curricula and training for teachers at www.actioncivics.org. Good luck!
