Hello out there you summer-time project planners! Until Edutopia creates a World Languages group... hint, hint ;) I'd like to see if I can find any Spanish teachers out there! I'm starting to develop a 2 year High School Spanish curriculum at a PBL school and I'd love to hear from you about what successes (or failures) you've had in your own classrooms. I have a TON of freedom in terms of curriculum design so the sky's the limit. I am interested in sharing project ideas, websites, ways to motivate students etc. Also, I'm curious to hear if anyone has had success in bringing in members of the Spanish-speaking community to help with conversation practice or to help provide an authentic audience for presentations... I'd love to hear from you! Thanks, Maria

The best thing I have found is Youtube.com Just take up a project, search for it on youtube. You will find many videos posted of the project with step by step video instructions. Have your team watch the video and them replicate it. Its great summer time fun.

It would be lovely if you could share some of your projects. Would you mind to share? I will be teaching High School, Spanish 2 PAP, 3 PAP and Sp 4 AP.
I will be teaching imperfect for sure, and the project involving a team of CSI detectives seems very engaging.
I'll be able to share some projects as soon as I have more experience with PBL.

I also really like your CSI project idea and will be teaching upper-level Spanish classes this year (Spanish 3 and 4) in a PBL environment (New Tech and ISSN). I would love to learn more about other projects that you've implemented in your classroom. Some of the main grammar concepts I will cover include: Preterite, Imperfect, Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns, Reflexive Verbs, Informal and Formal Commands, Possessive Adjectives (mio, tuyo, etc.), Various progressives, Subjunctive, Various perfects, Future and Conditional. I taught Spanish 1 using PBL last year. Although it was my seventh year of teaching, it was my first year in a PBL classroom. I have ideas that some may be interested in and am willing to share whatever I can. Some projects worked better than others, of course. Examples: Conversation Cafe, Introductions through EPals, Family Trees and Albums, Costa de Buenos Aires (spin off of Jersey Shore) to introduce themselves and discuss likes and dislikes.

Hola Lynda and all, your projects are more what I have done also-I am teaching Span 1 and 2 with the book Realidades. I like the way those projects turn out and recently the students have begun to do way more videos and power points with great graphics that I use in the other classes....they have to do daily skits and dialogues. they teach concepts, and group projects also. I am curious about common core adjustments and how people are doing that.

I also would love some Span 1 present tense PBL ideas! Span 2 is preterite, imperfect, and those indirect and direct pronouns! Would love ideas for these too!

Dear PBL for WL friends...

We have heard your cry for help, and are pleased to let you know that there is indeed a WL Community Forum here on Edutopia, and we chat about all things PBL for WL! Yes indeed! Hop on over to the WL forum, and feel free to post your questions there.

In the meantime, let me whet your appetite with a few ideas!

Although I teach French, not Spanish, it is my contention that PBL for WL works regardless of the language of instruction. Obviously, there are discrete language bricks and mortar matters (ie, vocabulary, syntax, and of course, structural matters) to consider in addition tot he cultural contexts which will vary by language. Still, by and large, all level one WL courses deal with very similar contexts - school, family, travel, foods, sport... As a result, we can readily design PBL for WL by level and proficiency targets, rather than by languages. SO take heart! you can work with a French teacher, or a Chinese teacher, or... you get the idea!

I should mention at this point, before going on, that I have been doing workshops for WL teachers on how to do PBL in WL for a few years now, and in the course of working with a large number of teachers, I have come to a few conclusions, at least for now!

One of those is that in WL, the project element of PBL is the tool for student engagement in their own learning, and that the presentation of the project is not really the only endpoint. Once the project presentations are complete, we still need to assess spontaneous communicative proficiencies as a result of the inquiry. I build projects around communicative learning targets first, design the final standards-based proficiency assessments, then backwards plan from there to the project, embedding the 8 elements of PBL (cf http://BIE.org), and the 21st Century skills, whilst aiming for depth of knowledge on global themes.
