How do you differentiate instruction?

Personalizing Instruction for Technology as well as with Technology

There was an article in the NYT) this weekend, saying that despite all the spending on technology for the classroom, test scores hadn't yet magically gone up.

This got me a little concerned, because we don't say "I bought this new history text book, and even though the teachers have just tried this new book for one year, test scores remained the same (or even went down), so this new book is pointless. The old outdated one was just as good."

Tech in the classroom needs to be learned how to be used well by all teachers (and students), and that takes time- we struggle with this in our district, and are even looking to develop personalized learning programs for professional development, so our teachers get what they need rather than sitting through expensive, one size fits all lectures that may not apply to them.

When you are looking to personalize learning for kids and for teachers, what do you do? How do you use technology to accomplish this well? Is learning how to use the technology something that needs to be personalized as well?
