I find myself in the same boat as Barbara-I am looking at PBL as a way to really engage my students and most of my team just wants to do enough to get them to pass our high stakes tests. I have little building support and so am participating in this Professional Development opportunity to stretch myself as a teacher and to expose my students to more global applications of our curriculum. I guess I am the classic Geek (what my friends call me) or a Lone Wolf.
Yup, Kinda what I was expecting! I have applied to a school that does Expeditionary learning exclusively and if I get the job, I am anxious to see how much collaboration goes on between the teachers! I hope for the best case scenario and they are team oriented! Thanks for the feedback.

I think allowing students to create thier own essential question regarding this project may be the first step to relevancy...what do you all think?
I might post some state standards to spark some ideas, or do a graphic web then tie our knowledge to the standards and then students can work on an essential Q that intrigues them.

I love the idea of using Prince William as an introduction for 3rd grade and what happens to animals. I am not familiar with Oil Spill, but I will look into it.

Hi, I think a graphic organizer like Kidspiration can be a great tool to collaborate thinking on essential questions. You can also continue building this as the unit and learning unfolds.

Hi, I would be happy to work with Donna and Michelle on a third grade unit. I am a library media specialist but would try to collaborate with the third grade on the animals and the endangered species.

Hi,
I am interested in this, Jacquita. Our third grade focuses on animals and animal classification. perhaps our students can compare the animals and their effects on the environments.

Karen, It would be interesting to collaborate on a third grade unit regarding the oil spill and then using feathers as a concrete way for sutdents to understand the impact on life. The focus can be on animals and perhaps endangered ones. It would be a great global connection as well focusing on the same concern globally.

Hi Corby,
I really like your logical thinking of taking the students and helping them identify and learn what the important aspects of life are for the animals in their own areas. Then to take them to the animals affected by the oil spill. Perhaps with the teacher from Qata, we can form a blog that students can communicate with a purpose. I would work on this unit with third graders.

I love the ideas that are being shared on the topic. I live in Casper, WY where an old oil refinery is being cleaned up and has actually been converted to a golf course. They still are extracting oil from the ground. I would love for kids to compare and contrast cleanup efforts here compared to those in the Gulf.

I too am hoping to connect it to local cleanup efforts of an old oil refinery site.
