What is the one cool online tool for special education you'd like?

Paul Aaron

I have a team of software developers that each have experience creating web-based educational software for students with special needs -- and they have three unscheduled months during which we'd like to develop a useful tool to give away for free. What sort of web application would be most useful to you -- for teaching, reporting, administation, you name it. If we were to specialize, we would be most interested in autism education. It doesn't have to be a super complicated application. We can build 2-3 smaller apps -- for iPhone or PC for example.

Hi Paul,
What a brilliant idea - I'm very interested in seeing how this works out. I've seen some apps on the iphone for Autism work already - here's a link to one: http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/smartphone-apps/autism-iphone-breakth...

Something that I think would be really useful would be an online version of an independent education program for students with special needs. This would kind of be a way for all a child's teachers to track targets, remember strategies for dealing with their needs and differentiating their work etc etc.

Let me know if you would like some more information.

Thanks Keith! Please tell me more about the indepdendent education program idea. Would this be a place where different teachers working with the same student add notes, track behaviors, kind of like Progress Book? Or something different?

Hi Paul, Probably not as

Hi Paul,
Probably not as comprehensive as Progress Book, but something similar. I imagine it might work like this:
1. Teachers, parents, student document individuals needs, determine strategies to meet those needs etc. This becomes the plan.
2. Teachers and teaching aids access this plan and provide feedback and other information regarding the student
3. Information is constantly reviewed, targets constantly reworked, etc etc.

The idea would be twofold:
1. Firstly, make the process more efficient that the current meeting once per term to review targets.
2. Make working with Special Needs students easier for teachers and teachers' aides.

Obviously, security would be vital, as there would be a lot of confidential information.

Hope that helps.

Paul, The notion of security

Paul,
The notion of security that Keith brings up is something that is often a double edged sword. Is there some way of creating something that caters to the levels of information that teachers/familiy etc. have access to?
