The first years of practice can be a time of great hope and exhilaration -- and fatigue and anxiety. This group is designed to allow new teachers and veterans alike to connect and share that sense of community that is so important in the first years.

Professional Development

Amanda Kindergarten teacher from Kalamazoo, MI

I am very new to this "educational blog" concept but I think it's pretty cool so far! I am in my second year as a Kindergarten teacher and I am looking to get some feedback on Professional Development strategies and ideas from others. What are some ways that new teachers grow and continue to learn outside of their everyday classroom?

Hi Amanda!
I love that you asked that question. It's so important to drive our own learning and not rely on others to provide it.
This summer I coordinated a PD called New Teacher Boot Camp. I don't know if you participated, but in case you missed it here is a link to the wiki http://edutopia-ntbootcamp.wikispaces.com/
In addition, I strongly recommend that new teachers take advantage of on-line free webinars, like the kind offered by Simple K12 or The Reform Symposium. I can send you links to that too.Let me know.
I also recommend that if you are on Twitter that you participate in New Teacher Chat!http://teachingwithsoul.wordpress.com/ntchat/
Reading educational literature is also key. Do you need some suggestions?
Lastly here is a link to an ASCD webinar I presented for new teachers. http://www.ascd.org/professional-development/webinars/lisa-dabbs-webinar... You may want to take some time to view it.
Let me know how else I can support you!
Cheers
~L
