affordable technology

Ms. Jones High School Math and Science Teacher from Grenada, Caribbean

I am a returning first year teacher working in the Caribbean, on one of the smallest island nations, Grenada. I teach both Math and Science at the high school level and would love to introduce technology into my classes. I, like other high school teachers in my country, do not have my own room and must go from class to class. I therefore need a lightweight option to using multimedia. I think a mini projector will be useful but I would also like to know what else I can use. One thing is for sure, since this is coming out of my own pocket, "cringes", I need a VERY affordable plan. Any advice, anyone?

Think of the outcome first

The one piece of advice I'll give you is before you start thinking technology, think about what part of the learning process do you want enhanced and from there you can start identifying some technology to help do that.

I see so many educators try and use technology just because they have to and because they haven't thought it through, it tends to not help much of anything.

When you decide on some tech, I'd suggest posting your need on Donorschoose.org. Your situation seems perfect and I'd guess many would help donate to your cause.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Elana. I would have liked to use a mini projector to show students videos especially in science so that certain processes and concepts are clearer. I find that all students especiasly visual learners would benefit from this greatly. A mini would be easier to transport, store and be more affordable. However I have been thinking that with my bright and airy class this will not be possible. I may need to consider something else. Many students have access do the Internet at home or school so I may consider some sort of online interactive site where we can share and post videos. Thanks for your input!
