OK, so here's a thread with very little purpose other than to share some titles of movies that make us smile or think about our own profession. Have a second? Then drop us a comment on your favorite teacher movie of all time! I can't wait to hear what you have to say. -Heather WG

Love Conrack. It is autobiographical about the author Pat Conroy and his teaching experience on Dafauskie Island. The movie made me go read the book which introduced me to my favorite contemporary Southern author. It didn't hurt that I grew up in the Lowcountry.

I realize that I'm coming in late to this discussion and don't have time to read all 100+ posts right now, but has anyone mentioned "Good Will Hunting"?

Good Will Hunting is not so much about a teacher (Robin Williams plays a psychiatrist asked to help a troubled but gifted young man played by Matt Damon), but it shows how schools (and family) failed the young man, which is very sobering.

For high school--"My Left Foot." The kids love the guts of Christie Brown while thinking to themselves, "At least I can talk right and walk." For Middle Schoolers, "The Miracle Worker," Patty Duke version. Same thing, they feel they have more going for them, but wow, what teaching is there!

This one kind of reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite, but the protagonist is a 14-year-old hermaphrodite. It's edgy, but not over the top. Not one to show to kids, but funny, and addresses alienation and bullying. Teachers turn a blind eye. The character Tootsie Roll is hilarious.

Joe Clark came to my college many years ago. I was so excited because here was this great educator and it was totally free. I went out and re-watched the movie and was so excited when I got my seat and listened to him. I was SO disappointed. He refused to talk about the movie (he didn't seem to have enjoyed it), didn't talk about education at all, and instead, preached a sermon that wasn't very friendly. I was so uncomfortable with his message. I'd say more, but all I can say is that I'm glad it was free.

My all time favorite, both the book and the movie, has to be Freedom Writers. We at 8 to Great love to use it to talk about emotional freedom in the classroom and in life. Thanks to Erin Gruwell!

A very inspiring teacher movie that you can't miss is "Front of the Class" I hope you can see it, and you're going to feel really inspired and you will have the opportunity to learn.
