Vocabulary Program

I teach 8th grade English and am looking for a new vocabulary program to use next year. We have been using Sadlier-Oxford for the past several years. I would like to use something that focuses more on root words/prefixes/suffixes, etc. I also am a 1:1 pilot classroom, so I am especially interested in an online program if one exists.

I am definitely interested in this project as I work with 5th-8th graders in our middle school. Vocabulary is one of the areas indicated on our testing as needing some extra attention.

For 11 of the past 12 years I used a book called Vocabulary for the College Bound Student. It is hardcover; unfortunately, I am not sure who the publisher is as the books are at my school. The students enjoyed the books - used the lower level (Vocabulary for the High School Student)with my 6th and 7th graders. This last year I used Wordly Wise 3000. This book focuses on building "real world" vocabulary through reading comprehension and other activities.

Vocabulary taught using Marzano's six steps, using ALL of them routinely, works well. However, the real key is for the kids to use the vocabulary as they engage in content-area conversations with each other and in whole class conversations. The new words have to be integrated into and added to students' academic language. Check out Douglas Fisher's ASCD publication, Content-Area Conversations.

I really liked Wordly Wise when I was the English Department chairman of a middle school. The seventh and eighth grade program included a heavy emphasis on Greek and Latin roots, I recall. There is a new 3000 version now that can be found at http://eps.schoolspecialty.com/products/details.cfm?series=2818M. It was a very good program for targeted, direct vocabulary instruction.

You should look into Word Generation as well...http://wordgeneration.org/ It's focus is on helping to build academic vocabulary.

If you want to improve vocabularly, make your own program in keeping with the skills that need to be taught for that grade.

Start by asking your students, what do they want to learn, or what are they most interested in.

They will tell you , believe me, Once you have that list, find reading material to match their request.

The reading material will likely be one or two grades higher or more, but that doesn't matter, because if they are interested they will want to read more.

Then have them pick out 20 words that they want to learn to spell. With this list - use it to help develop their vocabulary.

I started in October one year, and they were learning 20 words a week at the end of the year they were learning 60 words a week and they were picking the words, and they were not 2 or 3 letter words.

Words like gregarious - they asked me what it meant - I wasn't going to tell them, (because I didn't know) - I told them to use the dictionay, go back to the story and see how it is used, then come and tell me what you think, after they used in a sentence.

When they did that I told them that their use was correct, because that gave me time to look it and to be sure that I knew the word.

They reading level also improved by the end of the year because the magterial was at a high grade level by two or three grades. Kids will adapt, just challenge them.
