I always liked Yoda's "Do, do not. There is no try." But then my 3 year-old said, "I disagree with Master Yoda," and pointed out that people should always try, because "sometimes trying's the most important thing." (By the way, he hasn't even seen the movie yet, but my husband and I - children from the 70s and 80s all the way - can't help but weave our own references into our conversations with him.) So now, I guess THAT's my favorite quote. :-) What's yours? -Heather WG

Here are some of mine:

1. "He who opens a school door, closes a prison." --Victor Hugo

2. "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." --Henry Brooks Adams

3. "Education is not filling a pail, but the lighting of a fire." --William Butler Yeats

I've always been partial to the quote etched on the base of the statue of Emil Faber in the movie "Animal House." It reads: "Knowledge is Good."

These lessons for teaching life came from my third-grade teacher, Dee Uyeda, and were recited by a former colleague of hers at her memorial service a few years ago. I don't think Mrs. Uyeda actually said these things explicitly; she just demonstrated them in the way she taught and lived.

"One: Poetry is everywhere. If you take a moment to pay attention to a small something as it is happening, you are watching poetry. If you take another moment to write about it, you can share that poetic moment with others.

"Two: Math is everywhere. Math is complex and beautiful, and the number part of math isn't really the math part. Real math is in a pineapple, a spider web, a piece of music, the stars in the sky.

"Three: There is good in everyone. There are so many different kinds of goodness that people can have. Everyone deserves a chance to show how they are good.

"Four: Your whole life, there will always be something to learn. Life wouldn't be interesting without wondering and learning."

My very favorite quote is from Marva Collins:

"I am a teacher.
A teacher is someone who leads.
There is no magic here.
I do not walk on water,
I do not part the sea.
I just love children."

Two of my favorite quotes are from Lyndon Johnson:

"At the desk where I sit, I have learned one great truth. The answer for all our national problems-the answer for all the problems of the world-comes to a single word. That word is "education."

"The three R's of our school system must be supported by the three T's: teachers who are superior, techniques of instruction that are modern, and thinking about education that places it first in all our plans and hopes."
We used to have a shirt that we wore with a collection of stick figures. The caption read:

Teach them quick, before they think.

I never realized the complete truth of that shirt until I became a middle school teacher. :)
However, I like this one:

"Stop trying to remember and start trying to think."

All of my favorites came from Mr. Ralph Lobb, longtime Agriculture teacher.
When asked when we were going to have a test, he always answered "test every day"
If there was a nonsense question asked, he replied with a series of questions" Is the information gonna feed you, clothe you or keep you warm when the nights get cold? If not , you don't need to know"
Best teacher I ever had, made me the teacher I am.
