The vocabulary gap among students from different backgrounds
I am currently enrolled in a graduate program, which will certify me as a literacy specialist. We have studied many trends and issues in literacy education. I have recently read articles about the vocabulary gap between students with poorly educated or non-English speaking parents and their more advantaged peers. Research has shown a strong relationship between vocabulary size and reading comprehension as well. This relationship grows stronger as students progress through school. Can you suggest approaches to alleviate the gap in vocabulary that have or have not worked for you? How do you face the challenge of identifying which words are mot important for your students to learn especially with the gap? I greatly appreciate any feedback.
