Technology in Foreign Language Classrooms

A group of CT teachers just finished a week creating units and looking at various technology for the world language classrooms. This is the wikispace that we created during the institute with lots of links for teachers. We especially love Google Voice for getting students to call in various presentational assessment assignments from home..you can save the messages, email them to parents, embed them on a wiki, or download them to your computer to save. We also love wikispaces in general for keeping in touch with students and parents...Here is our wiki about technology:

A colleague and I used a blog to have our classes communicate with each other - the blog was powerful because it was public, and multiple people could read and comment on posts at the same time. We did this in English, as a cultural acitivity, but are hoping to use it in upper level Spanish (I teach Spanish 1-4 at the high school level) next year.

Together with a professional software company I created fun Quiz Shows which can be used with a digital whiteboard, projectors or in a computer lab. We have games for various subjects....of course for German, too.
I use these with my students to review and practice basic vocabulary, as a class opener or closer. They love the games :-)
you can check them here and we are happy to customize games for you with your own content. www.ifiveeducation.com Vielen Dank!

Elizabeth,

Check out our Epals discussion. I just posted on several sites where you can find Skype partner schools. I have had much luck making contacts with schools in the U.S. and abroad. If you want me to send your information to my contacts abroad and in the U.S. just direct message me your email. I'm sure they would love to talk to your students. The schools abroad teach grades K-6th and my US contacts are for 5th and 6th grades.

Also, I can set you up with our middle school Spanish students if you'd like. Just let me know.

Saludos,

Elvira

Jessica,

Thank you for sharing this wiki! I'm not very familiar with creating wikis but I have used one before. I like how your school district uses it to communicate with parents/families. Great idea!

Our district is working on giving every student their own google apps/mail account. I'm trying to brainstorm ideas for this. Would I be able to save google maps, google voice, and other google apps to the google account? Your input is greatly appreciated!

Nancy,

I love the idea of blogging with students! Do you recommend any sites that are secure for students? Also, do you make up names for them to blog? I'm a bit nervous of the liability issues and was wondering if you had any tips for people who haven't blogged with their students before.

Thanks in advance!

Elizabeth,

I just bought my own personal flip camera and found it very easy to use. However, I've had a hard time converting files and have to buy a software program that would do it for me. What software program are you using to convert files? Do you recommend one for a beginner like myself? I have tons of ideas that incorporate flip cams, but I want to make sure I can get past this file converting issue before we purchase some for our school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Petra,

Thank you for sharing this resource! This would definitely compliment Interactive Whiteboards. I'll be trying out the free trial version soon.
