My last post was a bit of a downer, so I want to end tonight on a positive note. I invited my student to join me at the library on a Sunday afternoon- just to hang out and read. It was probably one of the most joyful days of my life. I teach in an area whose population are motly immigrants. Most status poverty. The town's library is amazing! Half of my class showed up. One girl had a fever the night before, but insisted she needed to be there. Her parents brought her there, and it took everything in my power not to give them a group hug. It got better. One of my boys arrived with his dad. I told the dad he could stay or come back if he wanted to. He said that he lived too far away. I was confused until I remembered that that boy's parents were divorced. It was his day to be with his son. He lived 45 minutes away from the library. He said "No, my son HAD to be there"! My heart wanted to explode. We will be having another weekend library get together soon. Folks were trying to say how wonderful I was to do that. NOT ME AT ALL! All the credit goes to both the children and their caretakers! Goodnight!
