April is National Poetry Month. To celebrate the month, we're having a fun poetry contest.

Here's how it works:

:: Post your limerick on how to best improve education below :: Invite others to vote on your limerick. To vote, simply click on the thumbs up icon in the top right-hand corner of the post. :: At the end of the month, the top five limericks with the most "thumbs ups" will have their limerick promoted on edutopia.org's homepage and in our enewsletter! Plus, you'll get a fabulous bag of art/poetry-inspired goodies!

Let the Limericks begin! Deadline is April 30 at midnight PDT.

I voted for Penny Vos's limerick because it's true, even though it's also technically two limericks and a link.

In order to improve our schools
We need to revisit the rules
That empower the admin
to tie teachers' hands with
Inane anti-innovate rules.

Be open to every idea,
Consider, with feeling, their fears.
Wear a smile on your face,
Make your room a safe place,
Ready, willing and able to quickly shift gears.

Choose wisely what content's a keeper.
Focue on those ideas and go deeper.
Less emphasis on constantly testing
Will allow teacher to do their best thing (teach)
And it might all be done a bit cheaper!

Why do we try to learn
a difficult national tongue
as first foreign language
if we know what Esperanto is:
a neutral international language
especially developped for that use
a high quality communication tool,
easiest and most logical language.
Its words you "construct" with roots
already understood by many people,
amusing like LEGO bricks,
a logical grammar free of exception,
with fonetically spelled words.
Pupils like that and enjoy it, me too.
And it prepares us very well
for learning other languages.

By teaching Executive Control
Using M.I. to foster the goal
With Dewey and Payne
And Wong (quite germane)
would improve the child as a whole.

There once was a teacher with flair
Her ideas she'd happily share
Her team would all talk
Using PC's, not chalk
Inspiring lessons prepare!

There once was a lady named Maggie,
She taught kids and was a bit wacky.
Though the teaching was rough,
And the students were tough,
Humor worked and the learning soared magically!
