The passing of JD Salinger

Kathy Baron Edutopia reporter and editor, mother of two.

Like most people, I first read the Catcher in the Rye in high school. My friends and I saw Holden as a typical confused and alienated teen- albeit more tortured and extreme. When I re-read the book a few years ago in my book club, all of us - now middle-aged moms of teens - were shocked that we never realized the first time around that Holden was going through a breakdown.

My daughter had her first introduction to Holden about a year ago, and when I asked her about the book and what she thought was happening to Holden, she, too, didn't catch on to the seriousness of his situation. Has anyone else experienced this generational bifurcation regarding the book?
