5 Inspiring Education Quotes

Samer Rabadi Community Manager at Edutopia

There's something about a good quotation that sparks the imagination, and I thought I'd share 5 of my favorite education quotes:

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled."
- Plutarch

“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.”
― Margaret Mead

"Education is all a matter of building bridges."
- Ralph Ellison

“Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”
― Walter Cronkite

“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.”
― Phil Collins

One of my all time favorite education quotes, and one that I try to live my teaching life by is from Albert Einstein, "I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn."

Now because I often fail at doing this...though, not for lack of trying...my other favorite quote, from Jaime Escalante (the teacher that the movie Stand and Deliver was about), is, "You don't count how many times you are on the floor. You count how many times you get up." Life and teaching is all about getting back up and trying again!

Those are fantastic quotes. The Escalante quote reminds me of something Michael Jordan once said:

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

Never label a student, or accept another's label. Kids grow and change. Treat them all with the respect and love.they deserve by keeping them on task and ready to learn. Provide for them the best lessons you can invent. In summary: "Treat them the way you want your own children treated."

That is an awesome quote by Michael Jordan! Thanks for sharing. I am going to post that one up in my classroom along with the Escalante quote.

Thanks for sharing, Bud. There are so many variations on the Golden Rule, aren't there?

"What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others."
- Confucius

"One should never do that to another which one regards as injurious to one’s own self."
- Mahabharata

"O' my child, make yourself the measure (for dealings) between you and others. Thus, you should desire for others what you desire for yourself and hate for others what you hate for yourself."
- Ali ibn Abi Talib

These are just three. The Wikipedia page on the Golden Rule is a particularly rich resource for these kinds of quotes:

Is that quote from Phil Collins of Genesis fame? Three of my favorites are:
"When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts."
Dalai Lama

"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."
Aristotle

"Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or self-confidence."
Robert Frost

Oh no, I've been caught out... yes, it is Phil Collins of Genesis fame. I sneaked some song lyrics into the mix. :-)

“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.”

The quote comes from the lyrics to the song Son of Man, which was on the Tarzan soundtrack.

And I love your quotes, especially the Aristotle.

Thanks Samer for these

Thanks Samer for these fascinating quotes. I had a book once that showed the similarities of all the major religions of the world. The people of the world may seem very different, but we share the same hopes and dreams for ourselves, and our children. Teachers are uniquely situated to help the world by helping its children. It's great to be a teacher! (Sorry no quote - just some sincere ideas)
