Hey everyone! My name is Erika Saunders and I'm a 6-8 grade Special Education and Mentally Gifted Teacher. I'm doing a project this year with my MG students on Identity. The essential question we're exploring is "What is Identity?" The project is to create an Identity Exhibit to show at the end of the. Students will explore Identity and what influences it. Then they will select creative ways to represent identify for the exhibit. I really want to tap into their creative juices on this one! The only one I plan on "insisting" on is a mask where they will depict how the word sees them on the outside and how they see themselves on the inside. I thought it would be great for my students to have the opportunity to connect with people outside their school, family, community, city to see how identity is influences in other areas. I'd love to collaborate with teachers would would like to work with my student and/or have their students interact with us for the project and ultimately the Identity Exhibit. If you're interested, let me know! I'd love to tell you more about the project and, maybe, work with you all!!! Thanks! Erika

Hi Erika,
I recently collaborated with some middle school students on a video production exploring how media can influence and be used to influence our identities.

Here's a link to our final video with some notes on our process: http://themediaspot.org/gss-spring09

I'd be interested in discussing a collaboration or communication between my next middle school afterschool video production group in the Spring.

Best,
Rhys

Rhys:

I'd welcome the opportunity to connect with you and your class. I was hoping that my students would choose film as a medium for our Identity project. It would be fun to see how your students approached it and get ideas for my group.

Let me know what your timing is for the Spring. I can easily work something into our schedule for this project. We'll be working on it all year with the final Identity Exhibit to open in early June.

Thanks again!

Erika

Hi everybody,

This is an interesting discussion. I've worked on several projects during which my students creatively interacted with students outside of their schools. I'd be interested in talking with you about some ideas.

Cheers,

Dan

Hey Dan! Thanks for your post. I'd really be interested in talking with you about what you did and to see if there's any opportunity for collaboration on the Identity project I'm working on this year.

Only 5% of the world's population uses English as their first language. Yet young people all over the world are learning English as a second language. But what are our English-language young people learning in the way of other languages? The internet provides new opportunities to communicate throughout the world using the easier-to-learn whole-world language of Esperanto. I will be teaching Esperanto in China for the next five weeks. To see what Esperanto is and could be done by your students, go to the website for "Infanoj chirkaw la Mondo," Esperanto for "Children around the World."

I saw your Identity posting. I need lesson related to or on Identity and stopping bullying.
The bigger question is: What is Identity and how to use Identity to stop bullying.
It must be a lesson constructed for 45 minutes for grades 6-8.
Lesson should be engaging. Anyone such lesson....
