Collaborative Stop-Motion Project
Hello,
We run a collaborative middle school stop-motion project called The Longfellow Ten:
http://lf10.wordpress.com
So far, we have over 50 stop-motion films from classrooms in three states. Here's our mission statement:
The LF10 is a loose association of middle school students in undisclosed locations in cyberspace dedicated to promoting awareness of important academic terms and concepts through absurd stop-motion films.
Students create stop-motion films about important academic terms and concepts. We would love to add some new members to our project. The project is open to everyone, regardless of experience or expertise in stop-motion.
If you are at all interested in joining, or just have questions, please let me know!
Lets give it a try...
I teach a free- movie making class for mixed middle schoolers....it includes animations for those who are interested.... I'd like to get my kids to participate in this project...I will talk to them and get back to you with their questions..
Thanks for sharing
Now, I'd like to find a grup of 8th or 9th grade science students who are interesting in collaborating in a STEM project called Fuel our future...to be implemented at the opening of the new semester...
any one out there????
regards from sunny Rio de Janeiro

Collaborative Stop-Motion Project
Hi Florence & Cyndi,
Thanks for your interest in possibly having your students get involved in our collaborative stop-motion project, The Longfellow Ten! The project is in it's second year and we would love to get more students involved. We try to make it as easy as possible to participate. Here are a few details about the club:
- Students create stop-motion films around important academic terms. Currently, we have films about literary & science terms. However, we invite new subject areas, like math, social studies, or foreign languages.
- We host all our videos on Vimeo (not YouTube. You can either post the video to vimeo yourself, or send it to us and we will host it on our vimeo account for you.
- Each new class that participates has to come up with an original name for their group. Right now we have three classes, in three different states, that are involved. They are The Northern Contingent, The East-Coast Syndicate, and The Midwest Collective.
If you have more questions please let me know. If your students have any questions, please have them ask via our project blog:

Thanks again for your interest in joining The Longfellow Ten, and helping us in our crusade to raise awareness of important academic terms and concepts through absurd stop-motion films! :)

A Possibility?
Our 6th graders create clay animation films - usually around a science or health topic, in the spring of the year. Would that be too late to participate?

Love It!
What a great way to integrate technology into the classroom! What program do you use to do the stop motion animation?

Hi Paula!
Thanks for your response. My students and I use iStop-Motion and iMovie on Apple iBooks. We just started using iStop-Motion this school year and we love it. Here's a Google doc I created a while back detailing how I use Apple lap-tops and iMovie to create stop-motion films: http://bit.ly/50Ah9s
There are many ways to go about creating stop-motion video in the classroom. Kevin Hodgson, another teacher who is part of this project, uses Dell computers and Stopmotion Animator Freeware:
http://www.clayanimator.com/english/stop_motion_animator.html
Kevin has written extensively about his experiences creating stop-motion films with his 6th grade students:

Wesley Fryer, who is not a part of this project, has a great wiki page full of resources for teachers looking to experiment with stop-motion:

Hope some of this helps. We are hoping to get some new members to our project this year. It's not necessary to have any experience with stop-motion to join. We didn't have any experience ourselves when we started this project over a year ago! I hope you and your students will consider joining us in our effort to spread knowledge of important academic terms through absurd stop-motion films!
