I teach humanities at a charter school that works to re-engage struggling middle-schoolers with their education through literacy tutorials and an arts-infused curriculum. Previously, I taught language arts at urban-ring and sub-urban/rural schools in my division. I geek out on assessment and embeddable classroom technology that can disappear into the teaching and learning.
Hi! I am teaching fourteen wonderful students who are home schooled three days a week, have a Community Day, and a Conference Day. Our charter school works hard with our families to bring the curriculum alive to enrich the learning process for our students.
Thanks for joining our community here on Edutopia. I'd love to hear more about how your school is structured, staffed, and scheduled. One of my professional learning network (PLN) members is a local home-schooling dad and entreprenuer, and we find so much agreement on how to engage kids. I'm looking forward to learning from you!
Hi, since 1999 I've had a variety of roles with charter schools in Kansas City, Missouri. I started as a parent volunteer at Academie Lafayette French immersion charter school. I have a background in telecommunications and technology, so I started implementing technology such as a phone system, computer network, student database, and support mechanisms such as staffing and funding. I expanded my offer of support to other charter schools in the area, and organized a technology consortium with 11 of the 17 schools at the time.
Now I've moved to New York city, and looking for an opportunity to help new charter schools in the area. I love start ups, welcoming administrative teams and working late into the night!
The kinds of support you offer are essential to laucnhing a school and cannot be overlooked while staffing and planning infrastructure and curriculum. Thanks for joining us!
I am the director of the Kings Valley Charter School in rural Oregon.
I am also a partner in Charter Starters Inc. We help promote charter school that benefit public education. We provide charter school start up services with a focus on organizational development as means to successful charter schools. We write incentive grant application, district applications and work in the trenches with the developers to get the schools going.
I taught in a charter school and was 7th grade chair for a short time. The school was only 3 years old and I found that the school lacked leadership and direction.
I teach 7th and 8th grade math at a public K-8 Core Knowledge charter school in Parker, CO. I began my career as a mechanical engineer (CAD/CAM), spent time in customer support and as a technical writer. All of the skills I learned in my career (plus being a mom of 3 kids) has helped me become a better teacher. I love math and love teaching it! I am thankful for my charter school, which supported me as I began my career transition to teaching. Our charter school is 16 years old with a very lengthy waiting list and, I believe, and excellent program for all grade levels.
Greetings, All - thank you for sharing your roles and experiences with us!
Mark - How can I find out more about Charter Starters Inc.? With Virginia's tight charter laws, there's a real need for expertise in how to begin here.
Christine - It's certainly very difficult to launch a school without a shared vision or unity of purpose. Based on your experience, what advice would you offer teachers and administrators in start-up charter schools?
Laurie -I love learning about the successes of established charter schools. To what do you attribute your school's longevity and appeal? How did it get off the ground and build its reputation?
I do think having expertise on your project can help you miss some of the big bumps. We’re committed to building vital organizational cultures characterized by a common educational vision and good working relationships. We lay the foundations for charter school success by helping our clients develop effective communication skills, comprehensive planning, and strong administrative capabilities.
