A place for teachers and other providers of special education services to support each other, share information, and discuss topics, including assessment.
Welcome to this group!
I'm very excited to begin a group on Autism! The purpose of this group will be to discuss best practices related to teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. I am looking forward to hearing how other educators are making a difference in the lives of children with ASDs.
We will talk about methodology, technology, program design, motivation and many other topics/issues.
Please take a minute to introduce yourself.
Thanks Ray

I am a regional coach in the State of Ohio for the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI). We have many free resources available online. One resource is Autism Internet Modules. They are adult learning modules with content information including image and video supports, as well as research base, discussion questions, and activities for each topic. Some of the topics are Assessment for Identification, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Preparing Individuals for Employment, Structured Teaching, and Visual Supports. There are now 21 modules available. This could be a resource for some of the evidence based materials the group can access, as some of the modules are authored by the National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders. To view the modules, go to www.autisminternetmodules.org and set up a free account.
Great Site!
Thanks for joining, I went to the site you referenced, http://www.autisminternetmodules.org/ , and signed up. I'm excited to share this information with our teachers and other administrators.
It looks like a valuable resource for educators!
Hello!
I'm a new special education teacher in Illinois. My first teaching position begins this fall in an alternative school for students with emotional/behavioral disabilities. I'll be teaching an assisted/guided program and have a few students with an ASD.
Looking forward to hearing more from this group and learning better practices for working with my students.
1st teaching job
Welcome and congrats on your 1st teaching position. Part of my background is working in alternative programs. My last position was in a high school, we developed a wiki that may have some useful info for you (classroom rules based on Canter's assertive discipline and a cross content area curriculum map, and other things). Here is the site:

Hi, I am new to this group and would like to gain a perspective from others on strategies that have been used to help include students with autism in their home schools and with their typical peers.

Has anyone used Ipods for students with autism?
Hi, I'm a middle school
Hi, I'm a middle school spec.ed teacher who currently teaches LA and Math in my own classroom. Each year my classroom make up is different- LD/CD/Beh. prob./ Autistic/ etc. Sometimes a para-pro is available to assist, esp. with those kids diagnosed with Autism, however, not always, and even with help, I am the one responsible for providing the best for each student. I'm interested in this group and the discussions in order to get new ideas to use with my students- no matter what the disability.
Article today in CEC about inclusion and autism
