How to survive with high-stakes testing?

Recently, I have been very curious as to how other teachers survive with high-stakes testing looming in the background. In Texas, teachers in testing grades, have had difficulty this year preparing students for a test in which they knew very little about. Teachers were told to be prepared for a much harder assessment than they had ever seen, but were not completely clear about what types of ways to prepare their students. This type of information makes it difficult for teachers to survive with the high-stakes testing.
I have done a bit of research into some ways to prepare students for testing These way of which do not include test prep activities.
I would like to know how others have prepared themselves as well as the students for their high-stakes testing.
